It’s amazing what you can learn from sports programmes, especially while waiting for them to finish. For example, the sight of rain steadily pouring down on London or Manchester cricket grounds as a backdrop to the carnival sounds of Booker T. & the M.G.s was pure artistic genius. Elsewhere, Fleetwood Mac scored one of the most famous basslines in rock (and perhaps sporting) history, thanks to a motor-racing (?) programme on the same channel. And they also had a million-selling album, which doesn’t hurt.
